SOME INFO ABOUT THE UNION GROVE CHURCH OF CHRIST
Our commitment – We completely accept all that the Bible says because we believe that it is the word of God. We are convinced that only Jesus has the words of eternal life (John 6:68), and that only through Him can men come to the Father for salvation (John 14:6). We recognize that following Jesus means more than simply calling Him "Lord, Lord" (Luke 6:46), so in all that we do we strive to adhere to the teachings of the New Testament. We simply call ourselves "Christians" (Acts 11:26). Our size – For our Sunday morning worship services, our average attendance is about 135. Our worship – Our Sunday worship services consist of five acts: praying, singing, breaking of bread (Lord’s Supper), contribution/giving, and preaching the Bible. We emphasize the Bible’s message at all times, appealing to it for authority for all that we do in worship and every other aspect of the church’s functions. Our worship activities are led by brothers in the Lord, and all things are done decently and in order (1 Corinthians 14:40). Our Bible classes – Each Sunday morning at 10:00 and each Wednesday evening at 7:00 we have Bible classes for all ages that are taught by qualified teachers. During these forty-minute study sessions we open the Bible and seriously study the Lord’s wonderful message for us. Our work – The church is the pillar and ground of God’s truth (1 Timothy 3:15). The work of God’s church is evangelism (preaching the gospel to those that are lost outside of the Lord), edification (the building up or strengthening of the church), and benevolence (helping those that are in need), with our main emphasis being the salvation of souls. Besides our local outreach, which includes two weekly radio programs, heard in the Cleveland area on WBAC, AM 1340 at 8:30 a.m. Sunday and 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, Bible correspondence work, and mass mailing of periodicals [House to House/Heart to Heart] six times each year, we also support evangelists that work in different parts of the United States. We annually send our own preacher overseas to teach and preach in such countries as Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, and Ukraine. Believing in the need for sound gospel preachers, we provide support for men that are studying in preacher training schools. Our benevolent activities include distributing food from our food pantry, distributing free clothing the third Saturday of each month, and the support of children who lack proper parental care. Our history – The Union Grove congregation has been around for a long time – since 1885, to be exact. Several of the original members came from the Antioch church of Christ, which began meeting a year earlier just a few miles down the road in Polk County, TN. In its early days, in legal documents Union Grove was called "the church of Christ in the Thirteenth District," but the designation "Union Grove church of Christ" was commonly used by the 1890’s. Our special workers – The qualifications for elders are set out in the Bible in 1 Timothy 3, Titus 1, and 1 Peter 5, while the qualifications for deacons are recorded in 1 Timothy 3. Two men currently serve as our elders, shepherding the flock: Charles Cartwright and Eugene McCracken. Four deacons currently serve the Union Grove church: Clyde Brewer, Jr., Tim McCracken, Mark Stephenson, and Jim Randolph. Our current evangelist, Roger D. Campbell, has worked with us since August 1999. Our annual events – Each year we conduct a Vacation Bible School (VBS)
for people of all ages.
In addition, each spring and fall we conduct a gospel meeting/revival. For more information about the church of Christ, please click here to read an informative tract, written by our preacher, entitled "What Is the church of Christ?" |
