OUR BROTHER TITUS Though Paul wrote epistles to both of them, in comparison to Timothy, we know much less about the personal life of Titus. Like Timothy, Titus was Paul’s "own son after the common faith" (Titus 1:4). Let us look briefly at some other things that the New Testament reveals about Titus. Titus cared about others. "But thanks be to God, which put the same earnest care into the heart of Titus for you" (2 Corinthians 8:16). Titus was an instrument through whom God comforted others. "For, when we were come into Macedonia, our flesh had no rest, but we were troubled on every side; without were fightings, within were fears. Nevertheless God, that comforteth those that are cast down, comforted us by the coming of Titus" (2 Corinthians 7:5,6). Titus was a person of joy. "Therefore we were comforted in your comfort: yea, and exceedingly the more joyed we for the joy of Titus, because his spirit was refreshed by you all" (2 Corinthians 7:13). Titus was a partner and helper. "Whether any do inquire of Titus, he is my partner and fellowhelper concerning you . . ." (2 Corinthians 8:23). Titus was trustworthy and dependable. "For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee" (Titus 1:5). Look back over those character traits of Titus. Do you reckon you and I ought to care about others like Titus did? Would we be blessed to have Christians that comfort others? Do you think it would be nice to have some joyful people in our midst? Could we use some partners and helpers in the Lord’s work? What about trustworthy and dependable folks? Surely it would be a great blessing to every congregation of our generation to be filled with people like Titus. Helping our congregations be better and do better begins with you and me. -- Roger D.
