"THINGS THAT DO NOT PROFIT"
A number of times in the Old Testament Book of Jeremiah, the Bible speaks about things that do not profit (cf. Jeremiah. 2:8,11; 7:8; 16:19). Today there are also things that many people look at as being important or impressive, but in reality, in God’s sight they are really "things that do not profit." Possessing a big bank account is of no profit as long as our spiritual relationship with God is bankrupt. Jesus said it this way: "For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?" (Mark 8:36). Faith without works is of no profit. "What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? Can faith save him?" (James 2:14). Good-sounding words without action are of no profit. Jesus said, "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven" (Matthew 7:21). Being a good, patriotic citizen is of no profit unless we humble ourselves and faithfully serve Jesus – the King of kings and Lord of lords (Revelation 19:16). Our loyalty must be to Him above all others. Remember, "We ought to obey God rather than men" (Acts 5:29). Jesus said, "If ye love me, keep my commandments" (John 14:15). Having cute, talented, and smart kids is of no profit if we fail to train them to walk in the ways of the Lord Jesus. Fathers are to bring their children up "in the nurture and admonition of the Lord" (Ephesians 6:4). Parents and grandparents, we must make teaching the Bible to our offspring a top priority! -- Roger D. Campbell |
